William Stratton Mills, born on July 1, 1932, is a retired solicitor and former politician from Northern Ireland. He made history as the first Member of Parliament (MP) for the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland to sit in the British House of Commons, initially elected as a member of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP). Mills received his education at Campbell College, Belfast, and Queen's University, Belfast, and pursued a career as a solicitor. He was elected as the UUP MP for Belfast North in the 1959 general election and continued to hold his seat in subsequent elections.During his political career, Mills made notable efforts to counter fundraising for the Provisional Irish Republican Army and promote the Unionist perspective in the United States amid The Troubles. In 1973, Mills joined the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland before retiring from the House in 1974. Apart from his political endeavors, he was also a partner in a solicitors' firm and contributed to Northern Ireland's Historic Buildings Council. Mills is a member of the Ulster Architectural Heritage Society and the Irish Georgian Society and resides in Malone Park, Belfast.Following the passing of Lord Morris of Aberavon on June 5, 2023, Mills became the last surviving former MP elected in the 1959 general election and the surviving former MP with the earliest date of first election.
