Born Tannis Anne Goldthwaite in Nantes, France, she moved to the United States in 1936 and began her education at the Westlake School for Girls in Los Angeles. Chandler's acting career took off in 1940 with her debut in Prison Without Bars at the Troupers theater, followed by appearances in Devotion (1943) and Cinderella Jones (1946). She also dubbed parts for foreign versions of approximately 30 films due to her fluency in French and Spanish.
