The Taurus Project, spearheaded by the German Arbeitsgemeinschaft Biologischer Umweltschutz, is dedicated to resurrecting the extinct aurochs, the wild precursor of domestic cattle. This ambitious endeavor involves cross-breeding Heck cattle with aurochs-like cattle from Southern Europe, such as Chianina, Sayaguesa Cattle, and the Spanish fighting bull, to create Taurus cattle. These Taurus cattle herds have been established in Germany, Denmark, Hungary, and Latvia, contributing to the conservation of natural landscapes and biodiversity.The project commenced in 1996, aiming to enhance the resemblance of the cattle to the extinct aurochs. Taurus cattle exhibit elongated legs, a larger physique, long snouts, and forward-curving horns, closely resembling the wild type color scheme of the aurochs. Notably, Hungary's Hortobágy National Park holds the largest Taurus cattle herd, with Denmark's Lille Vildmose Nature Reserve and Latvia's Pape Nature Reserve also participating in the breeding efforts. This pioneering initiative represents a significant step towards reviving the ancient aurochs and preserving biodiversity for future generations.
