Usher Lloyd Burdick (February 21, 1879 – August 19, 1960) was a prominent American politician who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from North Dakota. Born in Owatonna, Minnesota, he moved to Dakota Territory in 1882 and later graduated from the North Dakota State Normal School at Mayville. Burdick had a diverse career, from serving as a member of the North Dakota House of Representatives to being the eighth lieutenant governor of North Dakota, as well as engaging in livestock breeding, farming, and writing.During his time in Congress, Burdick supported various New Deal programs and advocated for Native American issues. Notably, he was the only Republican congressional representative to vote against the Communist Control Act. Burdick's personal life also garnered attention, particularly his marriage to his 30-year-old secretary, Jean Rodgers, at the age of 79.Tragically, Burdick passed away in Washington, D.C., just eleven days after his son Quentin was sworn into the United States Senate. He was interred on his ranch at Williston, North Dakota. Despite his passing, his legacy continues to be recognized in the political sphere.
