Samuel Watkins Overton Jr. (June 5, 1894 – December 2, 1958) was an American politician and holds the distinction of being the longest-serving mayor in the history of Memphis, Tennessee. Born to Samuel Watkins Overton Sr. and Mary Hill Overton in Memphis, he was also the great-great-grandson of Judge John Overton, the city's founder. Overton Jr. was well-educated, graduating with an AB degree from Carroll College and later obtaining his LLB from the University of Chicago. His political career began when he ran for Mayor of Memphis in 1927, focusing on the construction of an airport, which became a major highlight of his campaign. Despite the city's significant debt when he assumed office, Overton's adept management during the Great Depression not only eliminated the debt but also amassed a $1 million surplus. He also successfully secured federal funding for various projects. However, his second term ended in discord, leading to his resignation on March 1, 1953. Samuel Watkins Overton Jr. passed away on December 2, 1958, leaving behind a legacy of service to Memphis.
