He served as a Civil War veteran, the twelfth governor of Washington Territory, and a United States Senator from the state of Washington. Squire's early education included attending public schools, Falley Seminary, and Fairfield Seminary. He graduated from Wesleyan University and later pursued a career in law after graduating from Cleveland Law School. During the Civil War, Squire played a significant role, participating in various battles and serving as judge advocate. After the war, he joined the Remington Arms Company and later moved to Seattle. Squire faced the challenging task of maintaining law and order during the anti-Chinese riots in Seattle and Tacoma during his governorship.
