Francis Bigod

Francis Bigod

Sir Francis Bigod (1507–1537) was an English nobleman known for leading Bigod's Rebellion. He was a committed Protestant, influential in advancing religious reforms under Henry VIII. Bigod opposed the dissolution of monasteries, preferring reformation and supported ecclesiastical reforms. He served as a Justice of the Peace and a Member of Parliament. His rebellion, however, failed to gain support, leading to his capture and execution for treason in 1537. His written works include a treatise on 'Impropriations,' highlighting his scholarly interests.

Francis Bigod hailed from a notable lineage, descended from the Bigod Earls of Norfolk and the Barons Mauley of Mulgrave Castle. Born in Yorkshire, he was the eldest son of Sir John Bigod and Joan Strangways. His father died in battle in 1513, and he became the heir after his grandfather's death in 1515. His mother later remarried Sir William Maleverer.

William Bigod

William Bigod

William Bigod, the heir to the Norfolk earldom, tragically drowned on 25 November 1120 in the White Ship disaster alongside William Adelin, the son of King Henry I of England. This catastrophic event initiated a long-lasting succession crisis in England. Known for commissioning the church at South Lopham, William's contributions to Norman architecture in Norfolk are recognized as some of the finest. His untimely death prevented him from succeeding his father, Roger Bigod, as Earl of Norfolk, leaving his younger brother, Hugh, to inherit the title.

William Bigod was the son of Roger Bigod, the 1st Earl of Norfolk, who rose from an unknown hearth-knight to a significant landholder. Roger's ascent was partly due to the civil war sparked by Ralph de Breton's unauthorized marriage contract, which led to Roger being granted the Earldom of Norfolk. Roger was also the Sheriff of Suffolk from 1116, establishing the Bigod family's influence in medieval England.
