    The Parish Beadle

The Parish Beadle (No specific birth and death dates available) was a comically overzealous character depicted in an 1823 genre painting by Scottish artist David Wilkie. The painting, held in the Tate Britain, shows the beadle taking Savoyard entertainers into custody for vagrancy. This work parodied the outdated penalties and chaotic law enforcement of the Regency era. The Tory politician Robert Peel was impressed by the painting but couldn't acquire it. The artist, known for his scenes of ordinary life, carefully depicted the figures and costumes. The painting was donated to the National Gallery by Lord Colbourne in 1854 and is now at Tate Britain.
