He has shaped the theoretical understanding of low-temperature physics, normal and superfluid helium liquids, and quantum physics of macroscopic dissipative systems. Born in South London, Leggett's parents were the first in their families to receive a university education. He studied classics at Oxford before pursuing a second degree in physics.
